Domain Extensions: Ten Examples and a Business Selection Guide

Choosing a domain extension is a long-term decision about your brand’s address. Familiarity can help, but an extension alone cannot guarantee search rankings, trust or sales. Examine ten examples by type and conditions, then choose through target markets, registration eligibility, the full name and operating cost.

01

Separate the domain, extension and page address

When planning a corporate website address, distinguish the domain from the page path. In example.com, .com is the top-level domain and example is the name beneath it. A section such as /services is a page path. The extension identifies the rightmost domain level; not every sequence after a dot in a URL has the same role.

Generic and country-code top-level domains are two basic groups. Generic domains such as .com and .org do not directly identify one target country. Country codes such as .de or .cn have a geographic context. Some extensions also have eligibility conditions. Recognising a suffix does not establish that any organisation can register it.

Registering a domain and running a website are separate tasks. DNS, hosting, certificates and content publication need preparation too. A registrar offering the name does not mean that every website or email service is included in the purchase. Record the specific services and responsibilities in the proposal.

02

Read ten examples by type rather than ranking

As with choosing website infrastructure, there is no extension that wins for every organisation. The following list preserves the original guide’s ten examples without claiming a current market-share ranking. Check the IANA root-zone database for technical classification and registry information.

The correct Russian country code is .ru, not .ur. A direct .edu address is also different from .edu.tr: the rightmost top-level domain in the latter is .tr. Another institution using a name does not establish your own eligibility to register the same kind of address.

ExtensionType or contextSelection note
.comGeneric top-level domainEvaluate availability, spelling and renewal conditions for the complete name.
.orgGeneric top-level domainThe suffix alone does not certify nonprofit status or trustworthy information.
.netGeneric top-level domainTest recall and possible confusion alongside the brand name.
.ruRussian country codeVerify the target-market fit and current registration conditions.
.deGerman country codeCompare geographic targeting with future market plans.
.coColombian country codeGoogle treats it as generic; test possible confusion with .com.
.eduEducation domain with eligibility conditionsEDUCAUSE conditions apply; it is not an ordinary commercial registration option.
.usUnited States country codeCheck current eligibility conditions with the registry.
.cnChinese country codeExamine registration conditions and the intended market together.
.ioCountry-code domainIANA lists it as a ccTLD; distinguish that classification from Google’s generic treatment.

Check eligibility before treating availability as approval

When assessing a hosting supplier, evaluate its domain-registration conditions separately. A search tool may show an available name without establishing that every applicant is eligible to register it. Local connections, organisation type and documentation can differ by extension. Ask how the relevant condition applies to your applicant.

EDUCAUSE’s .edu eligibility document sets out US-based postsecondary and institutional-accreditation conditions for new institutional registrations, with other specific categories defined separately. An older registration does not prove a similar new organisation qualifies. A Turkish .edu.tr example is not evidence of eligibility for direct .edu registration.

For .ru, .de, .us or .cn, read current conditions from the relevant registry and authorised registrar instead of relying on one universal document list. State the organisation’s applicant type and resolve uncertainty before committing designs and communication materials to the name. Record the source and review date for conditions that affect the choice.

Trial spelling, spoken use and confusion

The brand’s digital address should be practical for real people to communicate. A short name is not necessarily an unambiguous one. Say the address to a small group from the target audience and ask them to write it. Observe whether they omit the extension or confuse it with another business.

If the .com is unavailable, adding another suffix is not the end of the decision. Inspect the use of similar addresses and whether the brand name remains distinguishable. Unnecessary hyphens, numbers or difficult word combinations can complicate the trial. Do not assume every audience understands a technology-related association.

The trial is intended to reveal spelling, recall and communication problems early, rather than manufacture a popularity score. Read the email address using the same name too. Compare alternatives through those findings and your market plan. Avoid blanket rules such as every young startup should use .co or every technology business should use .io.

Spoken-address trial

Use the domain in an ordinary conversation. Check whether the listener writes the same name and extension without extra explanation.

Confusion check

Review similar names and other-extension addresses. Assess the possibility of a customer reaching the wrong site or sending mail to the wrong address.

06

Plan renewal ownership and future address changes

An address change needs a domain migration plan. Consider page redirects, internal links, canonical addresses, language relationships and email transition. Do not move a working address merely because a different extension is assumed to improve SEO. Evaluate the business reason and the full operational impact.

Compare registration, renewal, transfer and any premium fees over the same period. Keep the domain in an account accessible to the organisation, with recovery contacts and renewal tracking. Do not assume policies or prices will remain unchanged forever. Preserve the current conditions in the decision record and identify who reviews them.

If buying alternative extensions, state their purpose. Brand protection or a specific market may justify them; purchasing every variation is not automatically necessary. Prepare consistent redirection and communication if another address will be used. The result should be understandable throughout website operations, rather than only at the moment of registration.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Frequently asked questions

Does .com provide better SEO?

Choosing .com alone does not establish an automatic ranking advantage over other generic extensions. Country-code geographic signals need separate assessment. Do not confuse brand usability with a search-performance guarantee.

Aren’t .co and .io country codes?

They are country-code domains in IANA’s classification. Google currently lists them among exceptions treated as generic. Technical classification and search-engine country treatment are different questions.

Is Russia’s domain extension .ur?

No. The correct country-code extension is .ru. Verify spelling and registry information in IANA. The .ur label in the original Turkish guide was a typo.

Can every educational organisation register .edu?

Direct .edu registration has EDUCAUSE eligibility conditions and is not open to every education business. Country namespaces such as .edu.tr are separate. Another institution’s address does not establish your eligibility.

Are a domain and hosting the same service?

Domain registration and DNS identify the address; hosting runs the website. One company may offer both, but verify content, certificates and email scope separately in the proposal.

Can we change extension later?

It may be possible, but redirects, search signals, email and user communication are affected. Plan the move with an inventory and tests. Do not guarantee unchanged traffic or rankings.
