Start with the job the image must do
AI creative production starts by distinguishing concept exploration from a finished advertisement. Different tasks have different acceptance criteria. Exploring alternatives can shorten early work, but every generated variation need not be suitable for publication.
Models generate images from learned patterns; some families progressively transform noise into an image. Their architectures are not identical. Text generation, reference editing, background extension and upscaling are separate operations. Upscaling does not verify missing product detail. A raster image is not automatically an editable vector or a layered design file.
Compare quality using the same brief
An advertising creative brief should identify the subject, audience, channel, aspect ratio, palette, lighting, composition and details that must remain unchanged. Replace “a stylish product photo” with the actual product, surface, camera angle and required space for copy. Use the same input across candidates and record the work needed to reach an accepted output.
Product and anatomy
Check packaging text, logo position, dimensions, faces and hands against approved references. A beautiful image with incorrect product detail fails the task.
Text and layout
Read every character, spelling, line break and mobile placement. Even a typography focused tool can make mistakes; placing final copy in a design editor may be safer.
Consistency
Test several scenes with the same character or product. Evaluate reference controls, stable colours and identity, and the ability to change one area without rebuilding everything.
Delivery
Check actual pixel dimensions, file format, transparency, screen or print requirements, and final retouching time. A resolution label alone is not a quality score.

Fifteen tools and the questions each raises
For an AI services shortlist, use the following distinctions as starting points. Model catalogues and plans change, and two accounts on the same platform may have different access. The table reflects official product descriptions, rather than a common benchmark performed across all fifteen tools.
| Candidate | Useful task to investigate | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI / former DALL·E 3 | Image creation and editing through ChatGPT Images or GPT Image; replace outdated DALL·E recommendations with current access. | Confirm retired API support, the model available today and API billing separately from a chat subscription. |
| Midjourney | Visual concepts, style exploration and references through the web interface; Discord is not the only entry point. | Read default visibility, plan privacy options and the restriction on access through automated tools. |
| Canva | Magic Media or Dream Lab images alongside social posts, presentations and editor based design. | Separate Magic Design layout generation from image generation; verify content licensing and usage allowances. |
| Adobe Firefly | Image generation, filling, extension and Adobe editing workflows with multiple selectable models. | Separate Adobe model terms from partner model terms; vector features do not make every output a vector. |
| Stable Diffusion / Stability AI | Local control with suitable models and hardware; investigate a customised production pipeline. | Check the chosen model licence, revenue threshold, installation requirements and GPU costs. |
| Leonardo AI | Reference, character, style and editing workflows for game concepts or campaign drafts. | Test credit consumption, private generation access, upscaling and repeated editing needs. |
| Ideogram | Posters and images containing words; a useful typography comparison candidate. | Proofread final text; check model, API and local deployment licensing separately. |
| Runway | Reference guided scenes and workflows that carry an image into video production. | Test character consistency and current tool access; old Gen-2 descriptions are not current feature documentation. |
| Microsoft Designer | Everyday image generation and design through web, mobile and Microsoft related editing workflows. | Confirm credits under free or paid access, and relevant account and regional conditions. |
| Shutterstock AI | Image generation linked to stock licensing workflows with a choice of models. | Read licensing and eligible enterprise indemnity conditions; do not infer unconditional protection for every output. |
| FLUX / Black Forest Labs | Model families and APIs for generation or editing in a custom application. | Licences differ between versions; distinguish a local model licence from hosted API conditions. |
| DeepArt | The original article’s historical style transfer candidate for artistic interpretations of photographs. | Current official service access could not be verified. Do not make an operational workflow depend on this old name. |
| Artbreeder | Mixing and branching images for character exploration, alongside text based tools. | Identify the actual tool, uploaded image rights and export conditions rather than assuming one universal workflow. |
| BasedLabs | A platform for investigating image and video models across different tasks. | Check the selected model and feature for quality, allowance and rights instead of relying on the platform name. |
| Simplified | Marketing imagery carried into design with brand kits and team collaboration. | Confirm model access, brand assets, team permissions and whether automation is included in the selected plan. |
Do not build around a retired model name
An AI creative workflow built from an old tutorial may depend on a model that is no longer available. OpenAI’s API changelog records the removal of DALL·E 2 and 3 on May 12, 2026. Its official DALL·E GPT was also retired on August 30, 2026; check current ChatGPT Images and API options.
This does not prove that every similarly named option on another platform has closed. Record the actual model, version, editing capability and support arrangement in your account. Shutterstock’s closure of its Create editor likewise does not mean that all its AI tools have closed. Availability matters as much as the familiar product name.

Measure the cost of an accepted image
An automated creative production budget includes experiments, retouching and operations as well as subscription fees. One credit is not necessarily one image: models, quality settings, upscaling and editing can consume different amounts. Free access does not imply unlimited production, commercial privacy or API rights.
| Cost area | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Cloud plan | How do allowances, rollover, watermarks, fast or queued generation and additional credits work? |
| API | What are separate charges, rate limits, failed request billing and the team budget cap? |
| Local deployment | Who pays for GPUs, energy, model licensing, installation, updates and maintenance? |
| Human work | How many candidates were rejected, and how long did final copy, product checks and design work take? |
Separate commercial permission from privacy
Corporate AI usage rules should specify what can be uploaded and who approves publication. Commercial permission does not automatically clear trademarks or personal image rights. Check rights to reference photographs, employee or customer images, and confidential campaign information separately.
Midjourney’s terms make content publicly viewable and remixable by default; privacy options must be read alongside the environment used. Stability licences include revenue conditions for selected models. Adobe’s training statements about its own models cannot be applied to every partner model. Shutterstock’s indemnity for eligible enterprise customers has conditions including human review. None justifies a blanket claim that every image is completely free of rights risks.
Test editors, mobile access and APIs separately
For a production integration, obtain an approved sample before testing its transfer into the design workflow. Photoshop integration, a Figma plugin, a mobile application and an API are different capabilities. Check official documentation and permission before automating browser access: Midjourney’s terms prohibit access through automated tools.
Prepare the inputs
Record approved product references, brand colours and usage permissions. Keep source files and versions under the same project.
Generate and select
Save the prompt, model, settings and chosen variation. Do not upload confidential or customer data before the relevant approval.
Edit and approve
Verify copy and real product details in the editor. After technical export, the responsible reviewer checks brand and rights requirements.
Evaluate the image where it will actually appear
For AI product imagery, acceptance includes accurate representation, agreement with advertising copy and clarity on a small screen. A proposed logo is not a trademark registration decision. Do not conceal a product detail requiring a real photograph with an invented image.
Run a pilot with the same brief, a limited number of outputs and a named reviewer. Record acceptance rate, total production time and the relevant campaign outcome separately. If production accelerates while rejection or incorrect product representation increases, improve the brief, references and checks before simply changing the model.
BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Frequently asked questions
Which free AI image generator is best?
It depends on the task. Test the available allowance with the same brief and check watermarks, privacy, editing and commercial conditions. A credit balance is not an image count.
Is DALL·E 3 still a current OpenAI recommendation?
Its former official API was removed and the official DALL·E GPT retired. Evaluate ChatGPT Images or current GPT Image models; verify access on other platforms separately.
Should I choose Midjourney or OpenAI?
Compare style exploration, instruction following, editing, privacy and application integration on the same example. Without a measured common test, there is no defensible universal winner.
Can a generated image be used in advertising?
Possibly, if the selected plan and model terms allow it. Reference rights, third party subjects and brand elements still require review; provider permission does not remove every risk.
Does every tool produce usable logos and print files?
No. A logo concept, editable vector, correct typography and print ready file are different deliverables. Verify format, resolution and required design work before accepting the output.
Does a team need a subscription or an API?
Manual design may only require an interface plan. Generation inside an application needs an authorised API, a separate budget and technical ownership. A subscription does not automatically include API access.
