Arabic and RTL Website Launch Checklist

An Arabic page can look complete while a visitor cannot read a product code, navigate a menu or submit a form. Review real tasks, not only a screenshot. Use this checklist to connect every finding to evidence, an owner and a clear launch decision.

01

Verify language and document direction separately

Arabic website localization acceptance starts with two distinct checks: what language the page declares and what base direction it establishes. A lang value identifying Arabic does not automatically tell the browser to create a right-to-left document. The direction must be specified separately. These are related decisions, not interchangeable settings.

Select a representative homepage, service page, listing, detail page and contact screen. Compare the language declared in HTML with the text a person actually sees. An Arabic heading must not conceal a body left in another language. A CSS alignment rule can make text appear on the right without providing correct semantic direction.

Record the address, expected language, expected direction and observed behavior in separate fields. If a shared component causes the same defect on several pages, assign one owner to fix the shared component, instead of opening identical tasks for every URL. Then repeat the representative checks so a local correction does not introduce another shared issue.

Language

Check the copy, declared language and actual destination of the language selector.

Direction

Declare base direction semantically; visual alignment alone is not acceptance evidence.

Evidence

Keep a screen capture and short task record showing the conditions reviewed.

02

Test mixed scripts, numbers and prices

An Arabic website may combine a product name, Latin-script brand, model identifier and price in one line. Check more than paragraph alignment. Punctuation, brackets, number groups and link labels must remain associated with the right information. Copying the value should also preserve the intended sequence.

Use explicitly labelled test data instead of a real customer record. Include a product code, international phone format, email address and prices in two relevant currencies. Try a long brand name and a short identifier in the same card. Do not repair a display error by manually reversing characters in the stored content.

Keep the sample text with the test record so a later content update can reproduce the condition. Avoid forcing one rule onto every field. A descriptive paragraph and a technical identifier serve different reading tasks. Validate the chosen behavior in the real component instead of assuming that a correct isolated text example covers the complete page.

03

Check form and table direction

RTL interface development includes entering and submitting data as well as arranging labels. The label, typed value, error message, focus order and success state are parts of the same task. A readable email field does not establish that the backend received the expected value.

Ask a test user to move through fields with a keyboard, omit a required value and enter a long string. The error should identify the relevant field, and the person should be able to return to it. Review the successful state after the system accepts a controlled request; pressing the button is a separate event.

For tables, check the relationship between headings and cells, number alignment and mobile overflow. The initial scroll position should not hide the information a visitor needs. If a column is removed on a narrow screen, ensure it does not contain evidence required for a purchase or enquiry. Test realistic content lengths, not only short placeholder labels.

Review taskAcceptance evidence
EntryReview labels, values, autocomplete and errors as one usable input task.
SubmissionVerify acknowledgement of a controlled request; a click alone is not success.
TablesPreserve column relationships, useful mobile scrolling and decision-critical information.
05

Combine Arabic language review with transactions

Arabic localization review should assess task meaning, not only sentence fluency. A quotation button translated as a booking action creates the wrong expectation even if its phrasing sounds natural. Read form labels, pricing explanations, delivery conditions and error messages as part of the same journey.

Ask the content owner for a terminology list and the actual intended market. Currency, address fields and phone format depend on that context; Arabic speakers do not all live in one country. Do not add a local office, team presence or service authorization that has not been independently established.

The acceptance grid should contain component, device, task, sample text, expected result, observed issue, correction owner and recheck date. Do not accept a critical transaction failure because the page passes a visual review. A cosmetic detail and a lost form request have different business effects; explain their priority rather than assigning every finding the same severity.

06

Verify real locale URLs and indexability

Multilingual website localization should expose completed, accessible language counterparts to search engines. Keep each URL, declared language, canonical address and language-selector destination consistent. A translated title with an unwritten body is not a completed Arabic article and should not be presented as one.

Hreflang targets must be real counterparts and identify the corresponding pages reciprocally. Do not use canonical tags to collapse all genuine language versions into one page. An approved localized body needs its own URL. Redirected placeholders and drafts that remain noindex do not belong in the indexable sitemap inventory.

Before release, check GET and HEAD behavior, metadata and rendered content together. A public XML response does not establish successful fetching inside a Search Console account; those are separate observations. Record the real first publication and material revision dates. Do not manufacture historical dates to make a new page look older.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Frequently asked questions

Is translating the copy enough for an Arabic website?

No. Review semantic direction, mixed scripts, forms, mobile navigation and real locale URLs alongside the translation. Automatically mirroring every part of the current design is not sufficient either; the meaning and task of each component matter.

Are lang="ar" and dir="rtl" the same setting?

No. Language identifies the content language; direction establishes the base reading direction. W3C treats these as separate declarations. Declaring Arabic does not by itself change the direction of text or the interface.

Should every icon be mirrored in an RTL interface?

Evaluate directional icons in their task context. Logos and nondirectional symbols are not automatically mirrored. Review previous and next controls with their labels, reading flow and the actual navigation task rather than applying a universal visual rule.

How should phone and email fields be tested?

Enter controlled values and examine display, copied text, keyboard focus, error messages and what the backend receives. Right alignment alone is not evidence of correct submission. Do not publish real personal contact details in public test examples.

Should unfinished locales appear in hreflang or sitemaps?

No. Do not present unwritten bodies, temporary redirects or noindex drafts as published language counterparts. Add them when approved original content, accessible URLs and genuine reciprocal locale relationships are ready.
