Test mandatory behavior with representative products
The product data quality checklist helps prepare a consistent sample for every theme candidate. Include long names, multiple variants, missing images, exhausted stock and different photograph ratios. Inspect collection, search-result and product pages alongside the homepage; each supports a different part of the buying decision. A polished entry screen can conceal a weak catalog journey.
For example, a shopper seeking a particular size and color needs useful filter results, clear unavailable options and imagery that does not confuse the selected variant. This is a test scenario, not a claim that your store has already experienced the problem. Ask the product owner which information is essential. Check overflowing text, currency display and empty-result messages. Separate missing product information from missing theme behavior. Running the same sample across candidates makes that distinction and the difference between themes easier to assess.
Move from mobile appearance to completed tasks
Use the Shopify launch checklist to test opening navigation, finding a product, choosing a variant and proceeding to the cart on actual phones. Sticky buying controls, chat buttons and consent panels can overlap other content. A successful desktop view does not establish that a shopper can complete the same task on a smaller screen.
Review touch targets, text readability, focus order and keyboard interaction. Important information and controls should remain available when reduced motion is selected. Record whether animation delays the product explanation. For performance comparisons, use the same images and app setup rather than treating differently populated demos as equivalent measurements. Document the blocked step, device and expected result. A provider or developer can explain the correction, but the store team should repeat the original task before accepting it. Functional testing and speed review answer related but different questions.
Finding a product
Use navigation, search and filters together on a phone. Record what the customer must know to locate the item rather than checking only that the menu opens.
Making a selection
Verify that variant, price, stock and imagery describe the same choice. The message for an unavailable or incomplete selection should be understandable.
Recovering from an obstacle
Try a wrong selection, a closed overlay and an empty search. If the customer loses data or direction afterwards, the ideal-case demonstration is insufficient.

Evaluate themes through your actual work
We can review representative products, daily content tasks and required applications to prepare acceptance tasks for a shortlist.
Let the content team perform daily work before purchase
Ask the store management team to update a campaign heading, collection section and product explanation in each candidate. Many settings do not automatically make an editor easy to use. Identify which changes the team can make independently, which need development and how an incorrect edit is detected before release.
Use a draft page with short and long text, a missing image and a relevant language example. Check the mobile result after editing. Define permissions and approval around your operating process; routing every small change through one person may create a bottleneck. The design team explains the boundaries, and the content owner completes the daily task. If recurring small code changes will be needed, include them in the comparison rather than treating the purchase price as the whole cost. Editing evidence reveals a maintenance requirement that a visual demo alone cannot show.
Expose app and custom-development boundaries
Consider custom theme development when an essential function remains unsupported. Evaluate review, subscription, search and product-option apps against the catalog sample. Ask which app version, block and theme arrangement a compatibility claim refers to. Being able to install an application is not sufficient evidence that it behaves correctly in the intended interface.
Two applications addressing the same need can produce duplicate controls or conflicting events. Identify which omission can be addressed through settings, an app or limited code, and which makes the candidate unsuitable. Ask how an adaptation will be maintained after a theme update. Required app access or plan conditions are not supplied merely by purchasing a theme. Record the support boundary between the function owner, theme provider and app developer. That avoids leaving the team with an unresolved chain of providers directing an incident to one another.

Verify the license and support owner
With a Shopify partner, establish which store owns the purchase and keep the licensing record under brand control. Shopify’s licensing guidance states that a Theme Store purchase is licensed to its original store. Check the current conditions before using it in another store or environment. A file supplied by a contractor is not a substitute for a valid license.
License ownership, general updates, provider support and maintenance of custom code are different responsibilities. Show each in the proposal and ask which support terms apply to the specific candidate. Before changing the published theme, work on a copy and prepare a return path. An unresolved mandatory behavior should not be accepted on an assumption that it will be handled after purchase. A low purchase price can still lead to substantial operating work when the necessary support or adaptation is outside the supplied scope.
Compare candidates using the same acceptance record
Run the same launch tasks with consistent content, devices and applications for each shortlisted theme. Three candidates is a manageable example, not a required number. Start by eliminating failures against mandatory requirements, then consider visual direction, editor usability, adaptation work and the team’s capacity to maintain the result.
Record the finding, evidence, owner and retest point. A preview link alone does not say which task passed. When the strongest visual candidate lacks a critical behavior, assess adaptation or choose another candidate. Avoid changing the whole architecture for an optional effect. A theme does not guarantee sales or search outcomes. After release, changes to content and applications should trigger relevant checks so the conditions under which the initial choice passed remain visible. That creates a practical decision record rather than a preference score with no operating meaning.
| Area | Consistent task | Acceptance evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog | Long names, variants, stock and filtering | Product owner confirms correct information |
| Mobile | Find, choose and continue to cart | Device and task outcome record |
| Editor | Update campaign and collection content | Content team completes the task independently |
| Adaptation | Required app and theme behavior | Developer boundary and retest record |
| License | Store, purchase and support ownership | License evidence under brand control |
BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Frequently asked questions
Is the bestselling theme the best choice?
Popularity does not demonstrate fit for your product structure or team. Assess the candidate through the real catalog, mandatory tasks and support terms. Ask for the same scenario to be completed rather than relying on a reference screenshot.
Will an animated theme produce more sales?
You cannot establish that without store-specific evidence. Movement should help understanding and navigation. Separately assess behavior that delays the task or becomes unusable when reduced motion is selected; visual impact is not a conversion guarantee.
Can I try a paid theme before purchasing?
Shopify Theme Store allows previewing and editor customization before purchase. Publication requires purchase, and code editing is unavailable during the trial. Account for that limit when evaluating a custom adaptation and confirm the current trial terms.
Will changing themes delete our products?
Separate product and collection records from theme-specific content. Settings, sections, custom code and app placement need their own checks in the new theme. Use a copy and return plan while repeating critical tasks before publishing.
Should every missing function be filled by another app?
First establish whether the function is mandatory and whether a theme setting already covers it. An app can add permissions, cost, performance and support dependencies. A limited adaptation or more suitable candidate may be more appropriate.
