What Are AEO and GEO? Differences, Practice and Measurement

AEO means answer engine optimization; GEO means generative engine optimization. Both describe work intended to improve visibility in answers to people’s questions. They are not platform certifications or guaranteed ranking methods. Evaluate them alongside SEO, useful content and a clearly defined measurement plan.

1. How do AEO, GEO and SEO relate?

In a content marketing strategy, AEO often emphasizes direct answers while GEO emphasizes appearing as a source in generated responses. Usage overlaps, and platforms do not share one rigid distinction. Google’s current guidance treats generative AI search optimization as part of SEO.

A short definition and detailed comparison can belong on the same page. Featured snippets, question panels, AI Overviews, AI Mode and conversational search are different experiences. Appearing in one does not automatically secure another. Voice assistants also do not universally follow a single-source selection rule.

WorkTypical objectiveOutcome to examine
SEOHelp people find, understand and use a relevant page.Indexing, visibility, clicks and business outcomes together.
AEOProvide an understandable answer to a specific question.Visibility in the relevant format and accuracy of the answer.
GEOProvide clear, supported material a generated answer can reference.Platform reports, source links and the quality of referred visits.

2. Combine a direct answer with necessary context

For B2B SEO content, identify the customer’s actual question: what does the product do, which systems work with it, and what are its limitations? Answer directly under the heading, then explain conditions, examples and decision details. There is no mandatory 40–60 word block or 2,000 word success threshold.

An integration guide can contain a compatibility summary, supported-version table, setup steps and failure cases. Readers seeking a summary find it quickly; readers implementing the solution can inspect the detail. Avoid adding history or repetition solely to make the page look comprehensive.

Collect questions from sales, support and search research. Lists from Ahrefs or Semrush can support discovery, but every wording variation does not need a new page. Build topic clusters around related needs and the scope of existing content.

3. Check crawling and platform preferences

A technical SEO audit should examine robots.txt, noindex, canonical URLs, internal links, rendered JavaScript and CDN blocks together. Mobile readability and Core Web Vitals support the user experience; a green score does not guarantee selection as an AI source.

For Google, a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Check the current Search Console “Search generative AI” control too: inclusion is the default, and child properties can inherit a parent’s setting. This control is separate from AI training and other Search results. Understand its scope before changing it.

ChatGPT’s OAI-SearchBot is independent from the training crawler GPTBot. PerplexityBot discovers and links websites for search. Review permissions against current provider documentation and server logs; do not create broad security exceptions merely because a request uses a familiar user-agent name.

4. Use schema for supported features and visible content

A schema audit should describe what the page actually contains. Google does not provide code that marks a page as a featured snippet. FAQ, HowTo, QAPage and Speakable are neither interchangeable nor mandatory for every answer experience.

Google stopped displaying FAQ rich results from May 7, 2026. A useful visible FAQ remains worthwhile. Do not treat historical HowTo rich-result expectations as current. QAPage concerns appropriate pages where users answer one question; it does not automatically fit an editorial list of multiple questions.

Speakable beta has specific news, language and regional conditions; it is not a general Turkish voice-search requirement. Check current feature documentation and agreement with visible content. Google AI visibility does not require special schema or an llms.txt file.

5. Build trust with information readers can check

In content review, identify each statistic’s source, date, scope and method. Where you have firsthand experience, explain the conditions. Where you have not tested something, do not imply that you have. Author and reviewer details must describe real people and actual contributions.

E-E-A-T is not a single score or an insertable ranking tag. Real expertise, evidence and accountability help readers assess trust. Invented credentials, a LinkedIn link or academic styling cannot substitute for them. Appropriate expert review matters particularly for health, financial and safety topics.

Label table units, update dates and original quotation sources. A brand mention, backlink and AI source link are different events. Resolve factual inconsistencies rather than manufacturing reviews or mass mentions. Being cited does not establish that every claim was verified.

06

6. Prioritize the customer’s decision

An ecommerce SEO plan can need both concise product answers and detailed comparisons. Allocate effort to the most important information gap, technical obstacle or update requirement instead of applying a fixed AEO/GEO budget split.

Ecommerce

Keep price, stock, dimensions, delivery and compatibility consistent. Support buying guides with actual product details and appropriate Merchant Center data.

B2B

Explain integrations, use cases, implementation conditions and limits. A long buying cycle does not mean every answer must be long.

Local businesses

Maintain real locations, service areas, opening hours and contact details. Align Business Profile information with useful service explanations.

07

7. Prepare a twelve-step implementation plan

For local SEO and other projects, assign an owner, deliverable and verification method to each action. This checklist creates reviewable work; completion does not promise a snippet or citation by a particular date.

1–4: Technical preparation

1. Inspect indexing for priority URLs. 2. Review bot, CDN and platform preferences. 3. Check headings, mobile display and access to main content. 4. Validate existing schema against visible content and current support.

5–8: Content development

5. Choose real customer questions. 6. Write direct answers, conditions and examples. 7. Add evidence, sources and genuine expert contributions. 8. Connect relevant pages and keep images, product and location information consistent.

9–12: Measurement and review

9. Record baseline visibility. 10. Monitor a defined query sample under consistent conditions. 11. Report platform visibility, visits and outcomes separately. 12. Correct outdated information and errors, keeping a change log.

08

8. Separate visibility, citations and conversions

Use Google’s current generative AI performance report in your measurement checklist. Its official announcement dates worldwide rollout to August 31, 2026. It provides impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates; check sufficient-impression and access conditions. The data also remains included in overall performance.

Bing AI Performance reports citations and sampled grounding queries. These do not indicate answer placement or an authority score. For manual prompt checks, record platform, language, date, country and wording. Sample visibility is not a market share measurement covering every user.

Assess identifiable referral visits and key events in GA4. Do not infer sales directly from visibility. An absent citation does not always reveal a content defect: responses, source selection and measurement coverage can change.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Frequently asked questions

Which matters more, AEO or GEO?

Prioritize customer needs and current gaps. Product summaries, technical comparisons and local details require different work; there is no universal budget allocation.

Will they replace SEO?

No. Google connects its generative experiences to existing Search fundamentals. Indexing, helpful content and experience remain important; technical scope varies across platforms.

Is FAQ schema required for AI visibility?

No. Write FAQs that help readers. Google FAQ rich results are no longer displayed, and special AI schema or snippet code does not guarantee visibility.

Does GEO require long content?

No. The question and decision details determine useful length. Preserve evidence, limits and examples; do not pad the page to reach a word target.

Are brand mentions enough?

No. Context, accuracy and source matter. Track mentions separately from AI citations linking your URLs, and avoid fabricated mentions.

How long do results take?

There is no fixed AEO or GEO timeline. Technical processing, recrawling, competition and platform behavior vary. Evaluate deliverables and collected data over time.
