Define the operating arrangements being compared
For CMS selection, distinguish WordPress.org software, managed WordPress services and a specific Webflow plan. WordPress is an open-source publishing system that can run with your chosen host or a managed service such as WordPress.com. Webflow offers visual development, CMS and hosting capabilities according to plan.
WordPress control depends on hosting, themes, extensions and service scope. Webflow managing platform infrastructure does not remove responsibilities for content, custom code, connected apps and team accounts. A platform name alone cannot define the maintenance agreement.
| Decision | Webflow scope to assess | WordPress scope to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Operations | Site plan, team access and connected services. | Hosting model, maintenance service and application responsibilities. |
| Design | Visual tools, components and custom code. | Block/classic themes, page builders or custom development. |
| Content | Collection fields, roles and plan limits. | Content types, roles and extension dependencies. |
| Budget | Site/Workspace, add-ons and integrations. | Hosting, licenses, development and maintenance. |
Test design work separately from everyday publishing
When assessing Webflow development, separate designer and editor tasks. A visual interface does not eliminate the need to understand HTML layout, CSS classes, the box model and responsive behavior. Webflow also supports starting from templates; every project need not begin with a blank canvas.
WordPress block themes and the Site Editor, classic themes, and page builders such as Elementor or WPBakery provide different experiences. Evaluate their relationship with existing content, design consistency and replacement costs. A large ecosystem does not automatically provide easy operation or unlimited freedom.
Webflow’s legacy Editor became unavailable on August 4, 2026. Plan publishing through current Content editor roles, seats and permissions. On both platforms, ask an editor to draft, replace an image, submit for approval and publish. Evaluate animation with keyboard, mobile and reduced-motion needs; do not assume a conversion benefit.

Identify where custom code and integrations run
CMS requirements should distinguish a browser calculator from a form sending data to a CRM. Webflow’s site/page custom-code fields support HTML, CSS and JavaScript, not server-side PHP. Exposing secret API credentials in browser code is not an appropriate integration method.
Do not generalize this to “Webflow only supports front-end development.” Webflow Cloud can host full-stack applications through a separate development workflow. Application code, data models, access and usage limits require design; this is different from pasting code into a visual site.
WordPress supports custom PHP extensions, content types and API integrations. Hosting and security conditions still impose constraints. For ERP/CRM connections, define data mapping, failed requests, retries and ownership. Neither platform guarantees that complex integrations will work without engineering and validation.
Separate SEO controls from actual page quality
A technical SEO audit examines published HTML, URLs, indexing and resources on either platform. Webflow provides metadata, sitemap and redirect controls. WordPress core capabilities can be extended through themes and plugins. Having a control does not establish correct configuration or higher rankings.
Yoast SEO and Rank Math can support content analysis, structured data and link management; features vary by version and license. Check whether multiple tools generate competing canonical or schema output. “Clean code” is not conclusive evidence of faster Google crawling.
SEO acceptance
Check representative titles, canonicals, robots, language relationships, sitemaps and old-URL redirects. Inspect published output rather than relying on a marketing claim.
Performance acceptance
Assess mobile LCP, INP and CLS. Images, animations, tags and external scripts can affect either platform; the CMS name does not guarantee a high score.
User experience
Test menus, forms, error messages and keyboard tasks. A CDN or cache alone cannot ensure accessibility or successful user journeys.

Assign security and maintenance responsibilities
When examining WordPress tradeoffs, discuss core, theme, extension and server maintenance separately. Managed hosting may cover some work without validating every customization or integration. The official security handbook explains updates, trusted sources, access controls and recovery planning.
Webflow manages hosting infrastructure and platform features such as SSL. Accounts, third-party apps, scripts, content errors and connected systems still require owners. HTTPS encrypts a connection; it does not establish the security of every business workflow.
The original article’s claims that over 90% of attacks involve plugins, there is no risk, or backups need no planning are excluded. Record what data is backed up, restoration scope, support boundaries and protection of live transactions. Platform support is different from support for a custom design or integration.
Compare costs over the same period and scope
Website costs extend beyond a subscription or free core software. List initial development, content, training, renewals, maintenance, languages and integrations over the same period. WordPress expenditure can be planned; Webflow expenditure can change with scope and usage.
Webflow Site and Workspace plans serve different purposes. Team access, code export and hosting are not interchangeable entitlements. Check current add-on and usage conditions for localization, analytics and optimization. The old fixed $29 CMS-plan figure and generic hosting/theme/plugin ranges are not a current cost comparison.
Initial delivery
Design, content migration, data modeling, integration, testing and training. A ready-made theme can reduce work; purchasing a premium theme is not universally required.
Recurring operation
Hosting or Site plan, necessary team access, licenses, maintenance and support. Record included work separately from excluded interventions.
Growth and exit
Assess content, language, bandwidth and application limits. Include migration and rebuilding work in the total cost evaluation.
Project scenarios change the suitability questions
In platform evaluation, rules such as “always Webflow for SaaS” or “always WordPress for multilingual sites” are insufficient. A marketing website differs from a working product; an editorial archive differs from checkout. Use the questions below to define a pilot.
| Scenario | Priority question | Pilot task |
|---|---|---|
| Startup / MVP | Marketing site or working product? | Define the proposition and critical product workflow separately. |
| Corporate / SaaS | How will publishing, brand consistency and CRM transfer work? | Publish a resource and test data transfer in a controlled environment. |
| Blog / resource center | How are categories, authors, languages and archive volume managed? | Evaluate search and approval tasks using existing content. |
| Commerce | Are payment, tax, shipping, returns and stock requirements met? | Compare WooCommerce, Webflow and alternatives against operating requirements. |
| Hybrid store | What data crosses between the storefront and commerce engine? | Define Shopify cart/order boundaries; verify required integrations for local alternatives such as ikas. |
Plan migration and handover before selection
A website migration plan exposes content and technical dependencies before selection. Webflow code export is different from a working CMS-site backup. Official documentation excludes CMS/commerce data, localized content and certain functionality from standard export; forms and search can require rebuilding.
WordPress content export also does not, by itself, transfer themes, all files, a complete database or plugin licenses. Specify ownership of domains, accounts, source code and access. Protect existing URLs, metadata and language relationships alongside the new design.

Frequently asked questions
Is Webflow or WordPress better?
It depends on publishing, integrations, control and operating capacity. Compare equivalent pilots and total costs; there is no universal winner.
Which platform should I choose for SEO?
Both provide SEO controls. Content, architecture, correct indexing and actual performance matter. A platform or plugin does not guarantee rankings.
Does Webflow eliminate maintenance responsibilities?
It manages platform infrastructure. Accounts, custom code, connected apps and content still require ownership. Define support and restoration scope.
Can I still use the legacy Webflow Editor?
The official schedule made it unavailable on August 4, 2026. Evaluate current Content editor roles, seats and permissions against your team’s needs.
Is WordPress always cheaper?
Free core software is an advantage, but hosting, development, licenses and maintenance cost money. Webflow has plan and add-on costs too. Compare equivalent scope.
Can exported Webflow code run elsewhere with all features?
Standard code export does not preserve every CMS, commerce, language, search or form feature. Plan the existing functionality and work required on the target system.
