What Is GEO? How to Optimize for Generative Search

<p>GEO describes work to make your brand and content discoverable and accurately represented in generative AI answers. Start with useful, accessible pages that address real decisions. Then distinguish linked citations, brand mentions and customer actions so that a visibility report does not mistake an incorrect description for a successful outcome.</p>

01

How GEO works and where it overlaps with SEO and AEO

The AEO and GEO comparison explains their shared foundations. GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. SEO addresses indexing and search visibility; AEO emphasizes direct answers; GEO also examines source use and brand representation within generated responses. These industry terms have overlapping boundaries.

Model training and retrieving web information while answering a question are different processes. Retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, supports an answer with retrieved material but does not eliminate errors. Some systems expand a question into related searches. Publishing a page guarantees neither inclusion in training nor a citation or recommendation.

A linked citation identifies a URL. An unlinked mention merely names the brand. A recommendation expresses a preference. Combining them into one success score can conceal inaccurate product details, an outdated source or a recommendation for the wrong audience.

02

Choose the decision questions before producing content

A B2B SEO plan already maps needs, comparisons and purchase questions that can inform a GEO scope. Review sales objections, support requests and existing search data together. Assign an audience, language, country, destination page and content owner to each important question.

For example, “which CRM is suitable?” is not a complete brief. Add the decision conditions: team size, integrations, migration requirements and support expectations. Group nearby formulations of the same need into one useful page rather than creating a near-duplicate for every possible prompt.

Understanding a topic

Explain the term, its conditions and limitations. Connect that understanding to the reader’s next decision.

Comparing options

Use consistent criteria across alternatives. Explain who each option does not suit as well as its advantages.

Taking action

Direct the reader to verifiable current product details, service coverage or application requirements.

03

Make original information understandable and verifiable

Content marketing work should resolve a decision left unanswered by existing results. A genuine implementation example, documented research method, product limitation or explicit calculation assumption provides tangible value. Original information is not a public Google GEO score.

Follow a definition with conditions, an example and an exception. State the date and scope of data; link to the research or official documentation. Identify the role of a real author or reviewer. Do not invent firsthand experience, qualifications or customer results. Writing in the first person does not itself prove expertise.

Headings, lists and comparison tables improve access to information; there is no mandatory paragraph length or universal citation uplift percentage. Support images with descriptive alternative text and videos with appropriate captions or a text summary. Assess readable HTML, accessibility and mobile usability together.

04

Manage search access separately from training preferences

A technical SEO audit should examine indexing, canonical URLs, robots rules, snippet permissions and firewall blocks. Access to public information pages and access to private customer data are separate decisions. A claimed crawler name alone is not security verification.

Google’s Search generative AI setting defaults to inclusion; child properties can inherit the parent preference. Exclusion limits relevant generative Search uses. This setting is separate from model training controls and is not a ranking signal for other Search results. Eligibility still does not guarantee appearance.

ChatGPT search

OAI-SearchBot is for search; GPTBot is for model training. Their preferences are independent. Assess search opt-out using the documented scope and exceptions.

Perplexity search

PerplexityBot finds and links search sources. Check current bot and IP documentation when reviewing access; avoid broad firewall exceptions.

Change notifications

Keep sitemaps current. IndexNow notifies participating engines about changes; it does not provide immediate indexing or citations across every platform, including Google.

05

Keep markup, product data and local facts consistent

In an ecommerce SEO workflow, prices, stock, specifications and delivery conditions should be maintained consistently. Conflicting visible pages, applicable structured data and product feeds can mislead a customer. Verify the requirements of platforms such as Merchant Center separately.

There is no mandatory “Schema 2.0” standard for GEO. Organization or Product markup should reflect genuine visible information; sameAs should identify the same entity. Google FAQ rich results ended on May 7, 2026, and HowTo is no longer a current rich-result tactic. Useful visible questions can remain on a page.

For local businesses, maintain consistent addresses, hours and service areas. APIs or feeds can help with changing information, but opening private CRM data is unnecessary. Conversational purchasing is not universal across platforms: confirm a supported integration and its eligibility before promising an in-chat checkout.

06

Support accurate brand information with real sources

A content and publishing plan should use consistent company names, service scope, contact information and genuine areas of expertise. Relevant industry publications, original research and attributable expert contributions can help readers verify information.

Do not present PR as automatic authority creation. An educational or government domain does not make every publication trustworthy; purchased mentions and fabricated discussions cannot replace evidence. If an answer contains incorrect brand information, start by correcting your own page and source records. Do not suppress accurate negative feedback merely to manufacture positive sentiment.

07

Separate Google, Bing and sampled question measurements

The content measurement checklist helps record a baseline period, changed pages and expected user actions. Rising impressions alongside falling clicks do not independently prove an AI effect. Brand searches, referral visits and conversions cannot automatically be assigned the same cause.

For a sampled question test, record the platform, language, location, date, question set and repeat count. A citation rate uses only the tested responses as its denominator. Repeat under documented comparable conditions and distinguish platform changes from content changes where possible. Promise neither a fixed impact timeline nor guaranteed revenue growth.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Accessible, useful content remains a shared foundation. GEO adds examination of how generative responses use sources and represent a brand.

Do different AI platforms need separate pages?

Usually, one strong page should address the same user need. A genuinely different language, product or market may warrant separate content; every prompt variation does not.

Is GPTBot permission required for ChatGPT search?

GPTBot is a training crawler. OAI-SearchBot is evaluated separately for search. Official documentation explains the search preference and exceptions such as navigational links.

Does an absent Google AI report mean zero visibility?

No. Check report access and sufficient-impression conditions before drawing conclusions. Generative AI data also remains included in overall performance reporting.

Do tables, llms.txt or special markup guarantee citations?

No. A table can help readers compare information. Google does not use llms.txt or require a special GEO file, schema or ideal word count. Review other platforms separately.

What should the first GEO deliverable contain?

A prioritized question and page map, evidence gaps, an access review, named correction owners and a defined baseline. Derive budget and schedule from that scope rather than a promised success date.
