SEO or Google Ads? Start with the business decision
A digital marketing plan starts with the job the business needs to accomplish. Filling unused capacity next month, testing demand for a new product and helping buyers research a complex purchase are different tasks. Write down delivery capacity, payment timing, product contribution and website readiness before dividing a budget between search optimisation and advertising.
Search ads can buy eligible visibility for relevant queries, subject to approval, auctions and demand. An active campaign does not guarantee sales. SEO works on discovery, understandable content and useful search destinations. There is no Google advertising charge for an organic click, but producing content and maintaining the site still cost money. Organic positions are not permanently owned: competitors, the search experience and the website itself can change. Neither channel removes the need to offer something customers want.
Time-limited offer
If the product, stock and landing page are ready, advertising may help test demand. Define a spending limit and the conditions for stopping before the campaign begins.
Research-led sale
When buyers need selection criteria, integration information or practical detail, invest in the corresponding product and guide pages. Connect readership to suitable conversations rather than counting traffic alone.
Unready sales journey
A broken form, unclear offer or inaccurate availability creates problems for both channels. Repair the customer’s task and the business’s response before paying to send more people through it.
How SEO and Google Ads differ
SEO scope should be evaluated separately from buying advertising inventory. Technical access, category and service architecture, accurate content and relevant references form part of organic work. For a local business, its genuine profile and service coverage also matter. Better page experience helps customers, but one performance score or heading edit does not guarantee a leading position.
Google Ads includes more than text search ads. Search, display, video and Performance Max have different scopes and requirements; the direct comparison in this guide mainly concerns existing search demand. Ad Rank is not determined solely by the highest bid. Eligibility, ad and landing-page quality, auction competition and search context also contribute. Target CPA is an automated bidding strategy with a target cost per action; it does not mean every campaign charges only when a sale occurs. Separate the billing model, bidding objective and observed business result.
| Decision | SEO | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Content, technical delivery and maintenance | Media spend, management, creative and landing-page work |
| Visibility | Depends on discovery and ranking; no guarantee | Depends on policy, auctions, budget and demand; no guarantee |
| Control | Site content and technical implementation | Campaign settings and bids, rather than each individual impression |
| Evaluation | Queries, pages, organic enquiries and sales quality | Spend, queries, accepted enquiries and completed sales |

Compare cost, ROAS and ROI on the same basis
Performance marketing evaluation needs the same business outcome for both channels. ROAS compares attributed revenue with advertising spend; revenue is not profit. An ROI calculation needs an explicit cost boundary, including relevant production, fulfilment, refunds, management and content costs. Leaving development and writing time out of SEO makes an organic-versus-paid comparison misleading.
Consider a hypothetical illustration, rather than a client result: a sale produces £100 in net revenue and £30 contribution after product, payment and delivery costs. Spending £35 to acquire that order increases the first-order deficit. Do not add expected repeat purchases without evidence. In B2B, distinguish an enquiry from a suitable company, an attended meeting and a won contract. Keep the delay between a reported conversion and collected revenue visible. A channel can look successful while the operational or financial result remains weak.
Do not use a fixed SEO-to-advertising split or a universal minimum budget to choose a channel. The cost of obtaining useful evidence varies by offer and market. Paid and organic touchpoints may reach the same person at different times; adding platform conversion totals can double-count customers. Strong performance on brand-name advertising is not direct proof that those sales would disappear without the ads. Separate attributed performance from evidence of incremental demand when reviewing the next allocation.
Choose a starting point for ecommerce, local services and B2B
Local SEO helps customers find accurate business information and a usable contact route. In a hypothetical service company, advertising cannot compensate for missing opening hours, unclear coverage or nobody answering the phone. If capacity and the customer journey are ready, a bounded search campaign may be evaluated. Count answered enquiries and accepted jobs separately from clicks on a call button.
In ecommerce, align campaign destinations with current products, stock, delivery and returns. Category pages, product information and selection guides serve different organic search tasks. For B2B or SaaS, solution, comparison and integration content can support a longer decision; a campaign test can investigate whether a particular offer produces qualified conversations. These examples describe decision conditions, not successful Prix case studies. For healthcare, legal services and other regulated activities, have the permitted advertising and information scope reviewed by the appropriate specialist. Organic visibility is not a route around the applicable rules.

Manage paid and organic search as a shared learning process
An SEO content architecture can draw on advertising queries and questions heard by sales teams. A headline attracting clicks does not automatically provide lasting value to organic readers. Review the query, the page’s answer and the quality of the resulting conversation together. If a campaign creates curiosity but brings unsuitable customers, repeating its message across every guide may amplify the wrong problem.
The landing page provides shared work: accurate promises, readable mobile layouts, relevant evidence and a functioning enquiry route matter to both channels. When organic visibility improves, evaluate the combined business outcome before automatically removing ads. Where remarketing is appropriate, check the relevant communication, consent and measurement conditions. Document who owns the work, who can change accounts and which period is being compared. Separate teams should not claim the same sale independently or optimise conflicting definitions of success.
Map the offer
Connect a query to the appropriate product or service destination. Record the buyer’s question, the current answer and missing evidence in one shared working list.
Bound the experiment
Use one defined offer and a comparable scope. Set the spending ceiling, intended outcome and action to take when the available data cannot support a confident decision.
Review the business result
Discuss visibility, suitable enquiries, completed sales and operational capacity. A high click count or attractive ranking screenshot alone does not justify a larger budget.
Use evidence to revise the channel plan
A measurement plan defines what an event means. Opening a form, receiving a server-accepted submission and completing a sale are different stages. Search Console helps examine organic queries and pages; advertising reports describe paid distribution; a CRM records suitability and progress. Time zones, attribution methods and reporting periods may differ, so their totals should not be assumed to match.
Keep a baseline and a change log. When campaigns, pricing, inventory and the website all change together, attributing the outcome to one channel becomes difficult. A review date is a decision point, not a ranking or sales promise. If the sample is too small, report the uncertainty. For an initial Prix discussion, bring the target market, priority offer, destination URL, existing spend, delivery capacity and available measurement summary. You retain account ownership; the necessary role and working scope can then be defined together.

Frequently asked questions
Does spending on Google Ads improve organic rankings?
Buying ads does not buy organic positions. Improvements to the destination’s information and experience can help both channels, but a larger advertising budget is not a direct organic ranking guarantee.
Should a small budget always start with SEO?
No. Consider offer readiness, existing demand, technical gaps, capacity and the information a test could provide. A single spending threshold cannot choose the right starting point for every business.
Does Target CPA mean paying only when a sale occurs?
No. Target CPA sets a conversion-cost objective for bidding. The objective, charging model and observed outcome are separate concepts; review the actual campaign configuration rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Can SEO results be guaranteed in a particular month?
No fixed month or position is guaranteed. Delivery, crawling, indexing, competition and demand affect evaluation. Review dates help discuss progress and the next decision rather than promise a particular search outcome.
Should I stop ads once an organic page ranks?
Not automatically. Examine brand and non-brand demand, total qualified enquiries, cost and possible sales displacement. A controlled review is more useful than deciding from one ranking screenshot.
What access does Prix need to get started?
An initial discussion may use your objectives and available reporting summary. Once the scope is defined, grant only the account access needed for the agreed work. Account ownership stays with your business.
