Define the job your mobile app will do

Mobile app development connects design, software, testing and handover around a task someone completes on their phone. For a browser form or administration screen, consider web application development as well. Store presence alone does not establish a need for an app.

Identify the user and the working conditions

For an illustrative brief, consider a worker recording a maintenance visit with a photo. Where do they work, what can they access, and who approves it? Define starting conditions, completion and failures. Acceptance means the right record reaches its reviewer.

Separate the app from administration

The app, supervisor’s dashboard and data system are separate deliverables. Workflows, roles and device capabilities inform discovery. List deferred features. Notifications, payments and location access need their own reason and agreed scope.

Choose platform scope against the requirements

Choose platforms against audience devices, hardware access and future releases. The mobile app development cost guide helps compare a single-platform brief with delivery across two platforms. Identify target devices before choosing the approach.

Compare native development and shared code

Assess platform-specific development and shared code against device features, interface behaviour and maintenance needs. Permissions and OS behaviour still differ. Test essential features, such as photo capture, on target devices early.

Make the support boundary visible

Record phone and tablet coverage, OS versions, screen sizes and accessibility expectations. Design for larger text, screen readers and keyboards. Releasing both platforms together and adding another platform later are different options. Explain the choice without assuming a framework, fixed savings or universal support.

01

Audience devices

Identify the phones and tablets your audience uses; record which device group the first release serves.

02

Required device feature

For camera or location access, define the purpose, permission request and route forward when access is denied.

03

Supported versions

Put platform and OS boundaries in the acceptance list; revisit testing when those boundaries change.

Assign data, API and permission responsibilities

Connecting to an existing system does not automatically include rebuilding it. Assign data operations and connection owners alongside the API integration scope. A signed-in account, a device permission and server-side authorization are separate controls.

Specify the data contract and access rules

In the maintenance example, workers see assigned tasks; supervisors approve records within their remit. Enforce those rules on the server. Document responses, errors, expired sessions and repeated requests. Assign access, test data and documentation owners. Keep unnecessary sensitive information out of logs.

Design offline changes and synchronization

For connection loss, scope local storage, retries and conflicts. Make unsent work identifiable. Do not assume retries can overwrite newer records or create duplicate tasks. Define a practical alternative when camera permission is refused.

Accept the app through completed tasks on devices

Testing belongs in the delivery plan from the start. Device, integration and feedback dependencies in How Long Does Mobile App Development Take? also shape acceptance. Agree the candidate version, devices and critical tasks.

Run the complete task on real devices

Test sign-in, an assigned task, data entry and the result on real supported devices. Check larger text, labelled screen-reader fields and actions reachable above the keyboard. Simulators and prototypes do not establish installed-device behaviour.

Turn failures into acceptance conditions

Write outcomes for connection loss, refused permissions and expired sessions. Record the version and reproduction steps. Separate defects that block acceptance from visual changes that can wait. Acceptance should identify resolved and open work.

01

Connection drops

Unsent work remains visible; a completed retry does not create a second copy of the same task.

02

Permission is refused

The user sees an explanation and the agreed alternative; the app does not lead to a dead end.

03

Session expires

The app requests sign-in again, prevents unauthorized changes and explains the state of pending work.

Separate store submission from account handover

Define what delivery means before preparing a release. Ownership and handover questions in How to Choose a Mobile App Agency apply here: a test build, store submission and user availability are different milestones.

Assign accounts, packages and store information

Identify account ownership, publishing and signing access, and recovery. Prepare descriptions, current screenshots, privacy information and reviewer access. Assign verification documents and data disclosures. Check current requirements for the actual account and distribution regions.

Plan review responses and resubmission

Beta distribution and a production release are different acceptance points. Consider TestFlight or a Google Play testing track against the distribution plan. Record review changes, owners and resubmission steps. Preparation can be planned; independent store decisions and approval dates cannot be guaranteed.

Define how the product will be maintained

Handover should enable your team to manage the next release. The mobile app maintenance scope distinguishes accepted-function defects, OS compatibility and new features. Agree responsibility and support boundaries.

Provide a handover another team can use

Plan source, editable designs, build instructions, API documentation and external-service access. Separate project assets from third-party licenses: delivering code does not automatically transfer every right. The receiving team should produce a test build, identify known issues and find the next publishing step. Transfer secrets securely and identify personal-account dependencies.

Separate fixes from further development

Assign crash, user-report and OS-change owners. Record support periods, contact routes and intervention conditions. New roles or approval workflows may change scope. Keep remaining first-release work distinct from new requests; do not assume indefinite maintenance or a fixed response time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about your mobile app project

Do we need a mobile app or a web application?

Choose against the user’s task, device features and distribution needs. Browser workflows may suit web applications. Camera access, offline records and notifications need assessment under actual working conditions.

Does shared code remove separate iOS and Android testing?

No. Permissions, keyboards, notifications and OS behaviour can still differ. Record supported devices and critical journeys for each platform. Matching layouts do not prove matching behaviour.

What determines development cost and timing?

Roles, platforms, APIs, data preparation and device tests shape the estimate. Account verification and store review add dependencies. Define included work, exclusions and client inputs before estimating budget and milestones.

Can the app work without an internet connection?

Scope specific offline tasks, stored data, pending-work status and synchronization conflicts. Do not assume every function works offline: some operations need a current server decision.

Is App Store or Google Play approval guaranteed?

No. Scope can assign testing, submission materials and review responses. Store decisions, account eligibility and distribution remain independent. Distinguish resubmission corrections from requests for new functionality.

Can another team take over after handover?

Prepare source, documentation, build access and license terms for transition. A test build by the receiving team can check handover. Record rights, account ownership, known issues and maintenance responsibilities.
