How Instagram Ranking Works: Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels

Instagram visibility cannot be explained by one score applied identically to every post. Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels serve different purposes, draw on different content pools and make different predictions. For a business, the useful approach is to identify the audience and value of each publication, choose an appropriate surface and measure whether attention becomes relevant demand.

01

Four experiences rather than one universal algorithm

A content marketing plan should give each Instagram surface an appropriate role. Meta explains that its ranking systems contain multiple models and that inputs change over time. The distinctions below provide a working framework; they are not fixed weights or a reach formula that applies to every account.

A person’s previous activity helps personalize what they see. The same post can appear at different positions for different people. What a business owner sees in their own account also does not represent the whole target audience. Separate personal observations from evidence available in the business account.

SurfaceTypical purposeBusiness question
FeedBrowsing followed and recommended contentDoes a photo, carousel or video explain this information clearly?
StoriesMaintaining current relationships with followersWhat question, reply or update sustains the conversation?
ExploreDiscovering content around interestsCan someone unfamiliar with the account understand the post?
ReelsDiscovering and watching videoDoes the video deliver its promise without unnecessary padding?
02

Feed considers content alongside viewer history

When planning Feed content, avoid using follower count or initial likes as the sole explanation for distribution. The main Feed can include followed posts, recommendations and advertisements. These are not all ranked by the same system; documentation about followed posts should not be treated as a complete description of every item in Feed.

Instagram’s explanations describe viewer activity, information about the post, the publishing account and previous interactions. Systems predict actions such as spending time with a post, liking, commenting, sharing or visiting a profile. The June 2026 Feed card also describes different predictions for photos, videos and carousels.

This does not make photographs obsolete. A close-up photo may explain a product detail, a carousel may show a sequence, and video may demonstrate movement. Choose the format for the information. Raw view totals from different formats and lengths should not automatically be treated as equivalent outcomes.

03

Use Stories to support relationships and replies

A Stories publishing plan should address current questions that matter to existing followers. Stories ranking considers stories from followed accounts, with signals about viewing history, interactions and relationships. Advertisements are separate from this explanation of organic story ranking.

The September 2025 official system card describes predictions about opening a story, replying, liking, visiting a profile, moving to the next story and exiting. Posting a large number of consecutive screens is therefore not a sufficient strategy. Each screen needs context and a reason for someone to continue.

For example, answer a common service question, show the relevant result and offer an appropriate contact route for someone who needs detail. Use polls or questions where the response can inform a real decision. Every interaction does not need to be a sales request; replies can also reveal useful topics for future content.

04

Make Explore content understandable and eligible

For content intended for discovery, help a first-time viewer understand the subject. Meta’s June 2026 Explore documentation describes candidate retrieval based on interests and engagement history followed by several ranking stages. Predictions include likes, saves, shares and negative feedback. No single count explains the whole recommendation process.

The subject, image and caption need to work together. An educational post should make the problem clear early and provide useful detail worth returning to. Choosing a broadly popular subject is different from reaching people who may actually need the business’s service.

Instagram’s Turkish recommendation-eligibility help page explains how eligible public accounts can be suggested to people who do not follow them. Professional accounts can inspect Account Status for profile or content issues. Eligibility does not guarantee recommendation. Content remaining visible to followers also does not mean it is eligible for recommendation to new audiences.

Evaluate the Reels viewing experience in context

For businesses demonstrating services through video, Reels can show both a process and its result. The November 2025 Reels system card describes predictions about watch time, early skipping, sharing, interest feedback and following an author. Its comparison of watch time with similarly long reels illustrates why a single completion threshold is an inadequate rule for all videos.

Show which question the video will answer early, without presenting three or five seconds as a mandatory universal limit. One central idea, understandable sound or captions, and readable imagery make production easier. Vertical framing can be practical; check the publishing tool’s current technical requirements separately.

Original production supports ownership and a distinctive contribution. There is no general reach guarantee for using trending audio in every video or repeatedly uploading an identical clip. Check commercial usage rights, and obtain a clear preference for publication and reuse when featuring customers. Appearing on camera may suit a business, but it is not compulsory.

06

Build small experiments instead of rigid publishing rules

Use a content measurement checklist to define one principal variable for each experiment. Do not assume that browsing, liking or commenting before publishing, or adding a few hashtags, automatically increases the distribution of your own content. Real community relationships matter; reduce neither those relationships nor useful replies to an engagement transaction.

Compare content with similar objectives over an appropriate period. Rather than copying only a successful post’s appearance, investigate which question it answered. Add a new example or updated information to the next item in a series. Test timing against your own audience data instead of claiming fixed weekdays suit every account in Turkey.

Topic experiment

Answer two genuine customer questions about the same service. Compare relevant messages and profile visits alongside reach. A small sample is not enough to declare a definitive winner.

Format experiment

Explain a comparable subject through a carousel and a short video. Evaluate saves, shares and target-page visits against the objective. Keep different view definitions separate.

Timing experiment

Choose two plausible publishing windows from your account information. Record topic and campaign effects. Use a few relevant hashtags within the current publishing limit; do not invent a universal optimal count.

07

Separate organic distribution, advertising and business outcomes

Assess an Instagram advertising plan through its own objective and budget. Instagram’s explanation rejects the claim that organic posts are suppressed to push businesses into buying advertising. Replace the claim that continuous advertising automatically strengthens organic ranking with a measurable objective for the paid campaign.

Record reach and viewing first, then saves, shares, profile visits, relevant messages and completed enquiries or appointments separately. Metric names and availability can vary in the account. Message volume should not be presented as sales volume; review whether enquiries concern the right service and location.

Reach is strong, demand is weak

The subject may attract the wrong audience, the service area may be unclear or the next step may be missing. Review the content and profile together before treating greater publishing volume as the solution.

Reach changed, the cause is unclear

Check Account Status, the content objective, format, publishing period and metric definition. One weak post does not establish a penalty or a permanent platform-wide ranking change.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram have one algorithm?

No. Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels are explained through different systems. Their models and signals change over time. A single score or a fixed list of weights is not sufficient for business decisions.

Does Feed only show accounts I follow?

The main Feed can include recommendations and advertisements. Do not apply the explanation for ranking followed posts identically to the complete experience, including suggested posts and paid placements.

Are photographs no longer useful?

No. Photos and carousels remain part of the Feed experience. Choose a format for the information and the audience response; the evidence does not establish that video always performs better for every business.

How many hashtags should I use?

Use tags relevant to the subject within the publishing tool’s current limit. A fixed count does not guarantee reach. Hashtags do not replace useful information or a clearly explained topic.

What is the best publishing time?

Use your own account information and audience behaviour to develop a test. No single weekday or hour suits every account. Record subject and campaign effects when comparing results.

Does advertising increase organic reach?

Advertising provides paid distribution. There is no general rule that continuously running ads automatically improves organic ranking. Measure paid campaign outcomes and organic content outcomes separately.
