1. Link source and link attribute are different
During a technical SEO audit, check the source page, destination, anchor text and HTML attributes. “Dofollow” is a common label, but no special dofollow attribute is required. An ordinary link does not automatically guarantee endorsement, indexing or a ranking improvement.
| Attribute | What it describes | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary link | A link requiring no special rel value. | It does not verify every claim on the destination. |
| sponsored | Advertising and paid placements. | Qualify the commercial relationship appropriately. |
| ugc | User content such as forum posts and comments. | It does not justify community spam. |
| nofollow | A relationship choice when other values do not fit. | It does not replace noindex or a crawl-blocking rule. |
2. Evaluate context before scores
For B2B SEO, explain why your resource helps the publisher’s audience. Supporting product documentation, research or a specific explanation provides a better selection rationale than merely appearing on a high-scoring page.
Relevant page and audience
Read the source page and inspect its purpose, topic and readers. Estimated traffic is not measured visits. A link from another industry is not automatically harmful; consider its actual context.
Clear destination and natural wording
Anchor text should explain what the destination offers. Avoid fixed exact-match or nofollow percentages and do not impose artificial distributions on another publisher’s editorial choice.
Metrics and trust limits
DA/PA, DR/UR, Authority Score and Spam Score are vendor metrics. They are not Google scores, penalty probabilities or .edu/.gov trust guarantees. Review score manipulation and actual page quality separately.

Examine target pages, existing references and the outcomes you want to report.
3. Prepare useful opportunities through eight methods
In content marketing, create something worth referencing first. Explain methods and dates for research, real outcomes and limits for case studies, and assumptions for calculators. A long guide or attractive design does not earn links by itself.
| Method | Value to prepare |
|---|---|
| Linkable asset | Original research, a practical guide, a case study or a useful tool. |
| Contributor article | New information for the publication’s readers; avoid ranking-focused mass guest posts and engineered anchors. |
| Broken link opportunity | A working alternative that genuinely serves the unavailable source’s purpose. |
| Skyscraper approach | Close an evidence or usability gap; do not simply create a longer version. |
| Resource list | An accessible page matching the list’s criteria and readers’ needs. |
| Digital PR | Real news value, verifiable information and independent editorial choice. |
| Visual resource | A chart or infographic with clear sources, units and usage conditions. |
| Unlinked mention | Suggest the correct official destination if useful; adding a link remains the publisher’s decision. |
4. Separate competitor research from communication
Record suitable publishers, relevant pages and your rationale in the promotion plan. Compare sources and linked assets among search competitors. A link gap identifies a source you lack; it does not prove that a publisher wants to link to you or that a paid placement is safe.
A draft can be concise: “Your page’s X resource appears to omit Y. This guide explains Z with its method and date, and may help your readers. Please review it if useful.” Address an actual gap without inventing praise, shared contacts or personal experience. Plan limited follow-up and respect a rejection.
Pitchbox and BuzzStream support prospect, conversation and follow-up management; Hunter can help find and verify contact addresses. Finding an address does not establish messaging permission or guarantee accuracy. Tools cannot make the quality decision for you; this guide sends no messages.

5. Choose different sources for local businesses and ecommerce
For local SEO, consider genuine memberships, chamber listings, appropriate industry directories and newsworthy community activities. Keep business names, addresses, phones and service areas consistent. Avoid claiming that every local publication has greater SEO value than a national one.
In an ecommerce SEO plan, real authorized-retailer lists, compatibility guides, product-use videos and comparisons can be useful. Product-exchange reviews, affiliate links and sponsorships need appropriate commercial qualification. Cimri, Akakçe and shopping surfaces are traffic channels, not guaranteed authority transfers.
Podcast show notes, social profiles and YouTube descriptions can guide readers to relevant sources. A mention or embedded video does not necessarily create a clickable backlink to your website. Help people in communities; do not fabricate questions and accounts for promotion.
6. Compare tool coverage and data
For a backlink audit, compare multiple sources with actual pages. Crawling, updates and normalization vary, so tools can return different counts. Do not assume any vendor has a complete link history or access to Google’s internal evaluation.
| Tool | Use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Linking websites, destinations and anchor text. | Sampled coverage; it does not list every link or identify nofollow attributes. |
| Ahrefs | Referring domains, new/lost/broken links and target analysis. | Organic traffic is estimated; DR/UR are not Google scores. |
| Semrush | Backlink analysis and audit markers. | Toxicity Score prompts manual review, not automatic disavowal. |
| Moz Link Explorer | A candidate for evaluation with DA/PA metrics. | Verify current product scope; a score is not a penalty decision. |
| Majestic | Trust Flow, Citation Flow and topical link analysis. | Vendor link models, not safety certification or Google measurements. |
7. Distinguish sponsorship from ranking manipulation
When choosing a SEO supplier, request publication URLs, methods, commercial relationships, attributes and delivery records. Properly qualified sponsored advertising can be legitimate. Ranking-focused purchases, automated packages, PBNs and excessive exchanges do not become safe through natural-looking prose.
A “toxic” label, foreign language or sudden increase alone does not justify Disavow. Google says most websites do not need it. Consider substantial artificial/spam links together with a resulting or likely manual action, and examine removal first. Incorrect disavowal can harm performance.
8. Track references alongside visits and business outcomes
Add source URL, target URL, discovery date, method, attribute and status to your measurement checklist. Separate total backlinks from referring domains: repeated links from one website can inflate counts. There is no universal monthly quota or ideal growth curve.
Verify lost links on the actual page and investigate an incorrect target, migration or removal. Repairing your own broken URL may come before requesting another link. Evaluate referral visits and key events in GA4 separately from organic visibility in Search Console.
Content, technical conditions and demand can change concurrently, so avoid attributing a ranking movement conclusively to one link. Request the same transparent deliverables when discussing work with Prix. Do not accept fixed two-week or three-month impact promises, algorithm immunity or guaranteed revenue.

Frequently asked questions
How can I earn backlinks without paying?
Publish useful resources and consider opportunities grounded in real relationships. Profiles and community listings do not automatically establish quality; avoid empty directories and comment packages.
How many backlinks do I need?
There is no universal number. Evaluate topic, source, target page and reader benefit. A competitor’s count is not a delivery quota.
Are nofollow links worthless?
No. They can direct readers, and Google treats attributes as hints. Do not interpret nofollow as absolute ranking influence or a noindex rule.
Are guest posts safe?
Distinguish genuine contributions from articles distributed for ranking manipulation. Qualify commercial relationships appropriately; attractive design does not legitimize spam methods.
Should every suspicious link be disavowed?
No. Scores and sudden growth do not require automatic action. Apply Google’s two conditions and manual review; incorrect disavowal can be harmful.
How do I check backlinks?
Extract candidates from Search Console and selected tools, then inspect actual source and target pages. Explain differences through coverage and dates.
When should an effect appear?
There is no fixed timeline or ranking guarantee. Monitor discovery, visits, key events and organic performance while logging other changes.
